December 5, the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) officially announced the results of PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2022. In PISA 2022, around 690,000 students from a total of 81 countries (37 members of the OECD, and 44 non-members) participated in the assessment. In Korea, 6,931 students (352 from 14 middle schools, 6,482 from 168 high schools, and 97 from four other forms of schools) from a total of 186 schools participated nationwide. The results show that Korean students that Korean students scored higher in all areas of studies compared to the OECD average. More specifically, Korean students scored 1~2nd in Math, 1~7th in Reading, and 2~5th in Science in the OECD member countries. Also, when compared to the 81 countries, Korea ranked 3~7th in Math, 2~12th in Reading, and 2~9th in Science. Compared to PISA 2018, OECD member countries’ average scores fell in all areas, while Korea’s average scores rose in Math, Reading, and Science. Compared to PISA 2018, the percentage of students at the top of the scale increased in all areas, and the percentage at the bottom of the scale decreased in Reading and Science.(December 5, 2023)
