The Ministry of Education (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hae), the Korea Education and Research Information Service (Director Park Hye-ja), and the Korea Educational Broadcasting System (President Kim Myung-joong) will test-run real-time interactive virtual class functions on the public learning management systems "e-learning center" and "EBS Online Class" from December 7 (Monday).

Website Address: (e-learning center) https://cls.edunet.net, (EBS online class) https://oc.ebssw.kr

Up until now, it has been inconvenient to use privately owned virtual class programs in order to conduct morning/evening check-ins and hold classes online.

? With the opening of the system, it is expected that attendance check and studying hours will be managed within the public learning management system. Also, various functions suitable for school classes will be utilized.

The virtual class function of the public learning management system was developed to allow 200,000 people to access at the same time. A stable service environment was established by preparing a back-up server covering of 50,000 people at once.

Starting with elementary schools, the pilot program will be carried out on a step-by-step basis with a one-week interval per school. After the trial period, this virtual classes will be available to all schools.

? However, even after the trial period, teachers may also utilize private programs if necessary for classes.

? During the trial period, the Ministry of Education will focus on the stability of the system with the operating agencies* and add some functions to officially open the system by February 2021.

* KERIS and EBS

[ Implementing specialized functions for school classes]

The virtual class system has added various functions suitable for virtual classes.

? Teachers and students can participate in virtual classes without installing separate programs within the "e-learning center" and "EBS online class," and the hours of entering and leaving the classes for each student can be easily managed in conjunction with the learning management system.

? In addition, the real-time morning/evening check-in service functions were added so that teachers could use them to check attendance or deliver updates or messages.

In addition to the basic functions of general videoconferencing programs, such as document sharing and screen writing, various specialized functions were added.

? Reflecting the opinion that it is difficult to induce students to participate due to the nature of virtual classes, functions such as 'sending a warning window' and 'checking class participation' have been implemented to increase students’ level of concentration.

* When the teacher sends a class participation confirmation message, a specific number will be displayed on the students’ screen. When the student enters the number sent, the teacher checks whether the student has entered the number correctly or not.

? It also supports the formation of virtual classes by adding a "collective discussion" function that takes into account of changes in the classroom environment and a "quiz" function that allows simple checking of achievement during classes.

EBS problem solving and group discussions will be provided in December.

[ Preparing for the stable virtual classes]

The Ministry of Education, KERIS, and EBS have conducted a function inspection* since early November, and have since conducted on-site inspection** on functions and performance while increasing the number of users.

* Functional inspection (November 2 to 11): Approximately 20 teachers from each institution who have high level of virtual classes participation.

** Field inspection (November 12 to December 6): (e-learning center) 3 education offices in Daegu, Daejeon, Gyeong-buk provinces. (Virtual Class) 1,300 schools nationwide

During the pilot period, user manuals, video clips, and FAQs are provided at the e-learning sites and EBS online class websites.

? In addition, it is planned to expand the telephone counseling center to actively support teachers and students to solve problems that they may experience during the implementation stage.

? In addition, through virtual briefing sessions by KERIS, EBS, and self-training by city and provincial education offices, it will help teachers become familiar with the new virtual class system before its official opening.

[ Continuing to improve the public learning management system]

The Ministry of Education continues to push for the overall upgrading of the public learning management system, including virtual classes, by collecting diverse opinions from school sites.

? Starting from the first semester of year 2021, the Ministry is planning to support high-quality virtual classes with a more stable system.

“This year, virtual classes were able to be settled thanks to teachers' dedication and efforts despite unexpected pandemic outbreaks and the insufficient functioning of the public learning management system,” said Yoo, Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister

? “We will continue to make efforts to make teachers and students feel comfortable and communicate smoothly through continuous improvement.”
