Correct Accounts of Korea Sought in

Russian School Textbooks

Press Release on October 10, 2007

Northeast Asian History Issues Countermeasures Team

At a joint seminar held on October 11, 2007, Korea and Russia exchanged discussions to correct erroneous accounts of both countries in each other’s school textbooks, under the theme of “Promoting Korea-Russia Mutual Understanding through Educational Material”.

Co-organized by the Academy of Korean Studies and the Russian Academy of Education, the 1st Korea-Russia Textbook Seminar offered venue for educational experts from both countries to look into how the history, culture and current accounts of Korea and Russia are depicted in school textbooks.

For the side of Korea, the seminar came as a part of government efforts to promote better knowledge of the country throughout the world, namely under the “Understanding Korea Project”.  In Russia, the Korean Culture Exchange Center under the Academy of Korean Studies has been carrying out this project since 2005.

As a result of two years of discussions and information exchange, in April 2007, the Korean Culture Exchange Center submitted a proposal of revision with regard to Korea-related contents in Russian geography textbooks.  The Russian side is currently in the course of publishing new geography textbooks that reflect the corrections.

At this year’s seminar, Russian textbook officials were asked to look into a new proposal for revision made by the Korean side.  Included are requests to correct the official name of the country from ‘Chosun’ to the ‘Republic of Korea,’ and the sea surrounding the east coast of Korea from the ‘Sea of Japan’ to the ‘East Sea’.  The Korean side also pointed out the need to provide more accurate information on Hangul, the Korean language, including explanations that Hangul is a hieroglyphic language, modeled after the exact shapes of human vocal organs to enable naturally easy pronunciation.

The Academy of Korean Studies and the Russian Academy of Education agreed to continue such requests and information exchanges through academic meetings at a regular basis, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to the purpose during the seminar.
