Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education YOO Eun-hae visited Seoul Urban Science Technical High School to observe its operation of the recently adopted credit system and the present condition of disease control and prevention management at school on Friday, May 7.
This visit was to look into the current state of a Meister high school, the type of vocational high schools tailored to industrial demands, which preemptively introduced the high school credit system since the first semester of 2020. It was also to check the situation of disease control and prevention management at its dormitory in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and to listen to the voices of those in the field on topics such as difficulties of operating practical training classes.
Firstly, Deputy PM paid a visit to the school dormitory (Gun-in Kwan) and checked the disease control conditions including management of common facilities and items as well as provision of guidance on compliance with the preventive measures for the dormitory residents. Furthermore, Deputy PM observed practical training classes from each major and watched preventive activities for COVID-19 for different types of training. Deputy PM also had an opportunity to listen to the difficulties of adopting the credit system for vocational high schools, including the major course system dedicated to employment support for vocational high school students, recognition of credits from elective courses from other majors, and ways to utilize educational institutes other than schools.
Deputy PM said, “Despite the global pandemic crisis, students are finding their dreams, thanks to efforts in student employment from teachers, supports from metropolitan and provincial education offices, and cooperation from parents.” She further added that “I would like to ask you to diversify the curriculum that can help students grow in line with the intent of early adoption of the high school credit system to Meister high school customized to business needs, and also to continue on your best efforts in disease control and prevention without letting your guard down so that all students can learn in a safe environment.”
